Rev. and Mrs. Stephen Choi served the Lord faithfully under The Independent Board in Taiwan from 2000 to 2002. At a very young age, Rev. Choi felt he had been called of God to be a missionary. Stephen was trained as a Chinese language expert when the government of Korea sent him to Taiwan to study education and the Mandarin language in the National Taiwan Normal University. After serving his country, he studied theology and determined to use his talents for the Lord.
Previously the Chois carried on a very dynamic ministry in Taiwan, where Rev. Choi preached regularly in three fundamental churches started by Dr. Albert Dodd. They also worked in two hospitals, sharing the Gospel with the patients. Their burden has always been to reach the lost through evangelism. In 2002 the Lord led them to reach the lost in Cambodia, and consequently moved there in January 2003. Rev. Choi’s previous training has been of great value in Cambodia. They have started studies in Khmer (the language of Cambodia), which requires lessons three days a week for four and a half hours per week.
Following a five-year struggle, communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns. During that period, over one million displaced people died. A 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside and touched off thirteen years of fighting. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy, as did the rapid diminishment of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s. A coalition government, formed after national elections in 1998, brought renewed political stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces.
It is in this environment that the Khmer people have become disillusioned with communism and Buddhism. The Khmer Rouge proved to be a brutal and self-serving people. The Buddhist priests could not provide safety to the many people who were willing to pay several months wages to protect against the brutality of the Khmer Rouge. Many Cambodians understand perfectly what David wrote long ago about the idols of the heathen, when he described them in Psalm 115:5-7: “They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.” This has left the Khmer people wide open to anything that can replace the spiritual need of their hearts. Stephen and Lydia have gone to Cambodia to share the only answer for this very needy people. Please pray for them.

The Rev. Dr. Luke Kim and his wife were appointed to serve the Lord under The Independent Board in January 2003. Dr. Kim is a medical doctor as well as an ordained minister. The Kims served for two years as the Director of Eden Dispensary Medical Clinic, Parasite Control Center (PCC) of Kenya , Ngomongo, on the outskirts of Nairobi.
The Eden Dispensary is visited on average by 300 people each month. These patients were seen and treated by the doctor. When the patients were first seen, Dr. Kim presented the Gospel to each one. The Dispensary was staffed with a nurse, a laboratory technician, a clerk and one trainee. A worship service was conducted before beginning medical examinations and treatments, and medicines were distributed at a price that is half of that charged locally.
In 2005 Dr. and Mrs. Kim requested a transfer to Cambodia , feeling it was the Lord’s will to do so. Following language study in the Khmer language, the Kims have taken up residence at Veal Renh, and ministering out of the Sam Rong Bible Presbyterian Church. They are thankful for the growth they have seen in the church.
Ministry opportunities have also opened up in Takhmau, situated just south of the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh . At this location are a number of sewing factories, giving Rev. Kim the prospect of Bible studies and Mrs. Kim the prospect working with the children of the factory workers.
Pray for this couple and those with whom they work. Pray for the hearts of the Cambodians, steeped in Buddhism and other superstitious religions.
